Choosing a Tax Lawyer

Posted on November 13, 2013

How do you choose a competent tax lawyer?

How do you choose a practitioner, finding someone that’s qualified to be hired?

It’s difficult when a federal tax lien is filed. It’s a notice to the whole world that you have a tax problem. You’re going to get a stack of letters and there are a lot of people out there who say they do what we do, but they might do it poorly. In making your choice for a tax attorney, you should stay away from anyone who promises or guarantees an outcome. It’s unethical and unrealistic. I cannot promise an outcome in your case, therefore when someone promises something to you; they’re acting in an unethical fashion.

If you receive a phone call from a practitioner, you should also stay away from them. They are again acting in an unethical fashion and you should immediately rule them out from the choice you are going to make in hiring a practitioner.

Something else you should watch out for are flat fees. If your case doesn’t go easily, the someone who promised a flat fee is going to to lose interest in your case and won’t be vested in working as hard on it as they should be. Or they may possibly just stop working. If they charge you a flat fee and your case ends up needing extra attention, you will be the one to suffer because they won’t treat your case as high of a priority.
