Department of Justice Announces Nine Indictments

The US Department of Justice recently announces indictments against nine individuals for filing false individual income tax returns with the IRS. In one instance, a defendant filed at least 208 false individual tax returns and claimed more than $1 million dollars in fraudulent refunds. If you are a regular reader of our blog, you know that the IRS has recently taken steps to attempt to reduce the number of false tax returns filed by scam artists. Has an individual filed a false tax return with the IRS bearing your name? If you receive an IRS notice or letter that states:

More than one tax return for you was filed
You have a balance due, refund offset or have had collection actions taken against you for a year you did not file a tax return
IRS records indicate you received wages from an employer unknown to you
