According to recent testimony by Timothy Camus before the Senate Special Committee on Aging, as of January 7, 2017, the IRS had a total of 83,000 employees, of which 16,200 of them are seasonal and part-time employees.
The IRS collects approximately $3.3 trillion in tax revenue per year and issued more than $400 billion in tax refunds during 2016. Even more impressively, the IRS processed more than 244 million tax returns.
Watching over the IRS is the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA). TIGTA was created by Congress in 1998 and is designed to promote integrity in America’s tax system. TIGTA provides oversight to the IRS in order to improve the economy, efficiency and effectiveness of the IRS.
TIGTA also investigates individuals and groups whose criminal activities assail the reputation and integrity of the IRS.
