Former IRS Employee Pleads Guilty to Filing False Tax Returns

Posted on October 18, 2017

Carla Lachelle Mitchell worked as an IRS representative in the IRS Service Center in Kansas City, Missouri.

While she was an employee of the IRS, she prepared tax returns for herself, her friends and family that included fraudulent wages or fraudulent dependents.  As a result of these false entries, the tax liability listed on those tax returns was lower than it should have been and increased the refunds listed on those tax returns.

Mitchell prepared a minimum of 27 fraudulent tax returns which resulted in a tax loss to the government of over $118,000.  Mitchell recently pled guilty to filing false tax returns and faces a sentence of up to three years in federal prison.

If your tax return preparer has filed a tax return on your behalf that you know was not honest and accurate, you may face civil penalties ($$$) and/or criminal penalties (Jail!).
