Holders of Government Security Clearances Owe $730 million to the IRS

Posted on September 05, 2014

83,000 Department of Defense employees and contractors that hold security clearances from the federal government owe the IRS over $730 million dollars.

Approximately half of the total tax debt is owed by 44,500 federal employees and the rest is owed by contractors or others. Approximately 20,000 of these individuals were eligible for a top-secret government clearance. The tax debts ranged from about $100.00 to millions of dollars with an average of about $2,700.00 per individual.

Federal laws currently do not prohibit individuals who owe money to the IRS from obtaining a security clearance. However, there is a concern that an individual with a security clearance and who is financially overextended may engage in illegal acts to generate funds.
