The average family pays about $10,000.00 to the IRS in taxes every year. But how does the government spend that money? Approximately 29% goes to the military, 29% goes to healthcare including Medicaid and Medicare, 14% goes to interest on the national debt, 13% goes to housing, food and labor, including food stamps and housing assistance, 6% goes to fund government operations, including the White House, 5% goes to science and education, including the National Endowment for the Arts and NASA and 2% goes to land and energy, including the Environmental Protection Agency and the National Park Service. We were surprised to learn that a whopping 14% of our taxes goes entirely to pay for interest on the national debt. That is a lot of money! What do you think?
