In December 2014, Elmhurst tax attorney Patrick T. Sheehan founded Hops for Humanity — a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that raises money for a number of local deserving Chicagoland charities. Organization members gather once per quarter to enjoy local craft beers while contributing to a good cause. The group’s motto is “Good Beer Doing Good.”
How it works is actually quite simple. Each quarterly event is hosted at a different local restaurant or brewery. Each member donates $100 to attend the event and sample incredible local craft beers. During the event, members hear presentations about three charities and then vote on which is the most deserving of the funds raised from the evening. Each event raises about $10,000, and to date, Hops for Humanity has raised over $80,000!
Our next event will be held starting at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 17, at Fitz’s Spare Keys in Downtown Elmhurst, 119 N. York Street. Fitz’s is a friendly family owned bar and restaurant with a large live music venue, where our event will take place. The beer for the event will be provided by Around the Bend Beer Company out of Chicago.
For more information on the upcoming event, make sure to check out the Hops for Humanity website.
At our summer 2016 Hops for Humanity event we were able to raised $9,000 for the Alyssa Alvin Foundation. The foundation provides an opportunity for children and young adults to explore interests in music and visual arts while receiving cancer treatments. We received the following note from Alyssa’s mom, Yoli, regarding the donation:
“We are grateful to the Hops for Humanity for their generous donation to the Alyssa Alvin Foundation for Hope. Being that our mission is to bring joy and hope through music and the arts to children and young adult cancer patients going through their medical treatments, we believe the Hops for Humanity donation will allow us to expand our programs in the following manner.
We will be able to give to more young patients a bit of joy and hope in their lives that will carry them through the many treatments and the ups and downs they may experience in their journey.”
