Singer and actress Lauryn Hill was sentenced to prison on May 6, 2013, for not reporting more than $2.3 million in income by intentionally failing to file tax returns for five years. Ms. Hill failed to file tax returns for 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009 even though she earned income in the approximate amount of $2.3 million. The government estimated the tax loss as $1,006,517.00. Ms. Hill pled guilty and the judge sentenced her to three months in prison, three months of home confinement, a year of supervised release and a $60,000 fine. In addition, Ms. Hill must make restitution to the IRS. Failing to file tax returns is a federal tax crime, a misdemeanor punishable by imprisonment up to one year. Do you have unfiled tax returns?
