According to the IRS Whistleblower Office annual report, 2015 was a big year.
Nearly 100 awards were made to whistleblowers, totaling more than $103 million. The payments made in 2015 are nearly what the Whistleblower Office paid out during the previous two years combined. Whistleblowers helped the IRS collect $501 million from taxpayers, an amount that is significantly more than what the IRS originally estimated when the legislation was enacted in 2006.
The IRS whistleblower office processes thousands of whistleblower claims each year. Whistleblowers can earn up to 30 percent of the collected tax debt, depending on the size of the collection. According to the IRS, there have been at least 500 awards since 2011.
